What Is Wellness?

Many people confuse wellness with being fit and disease-free; however, wellness doesn't just mean absence of disease or having a healthy body. Wellness is a broad term that refers to a healthy balance among the body, mind and spirit to create a feeling of well being. It’s a self-directed and an ever evolving process of growth and change in life.

It's not just some product that makes you feel or look good. It's actually a philosophy of life. The concept of wellness involves seven components, namely physical, psychological, spiritual, emotional, occupational, social and environmental.

  1. Physical wellness is nothing but your ability to develop and maintain a healthy quality of life. It refers to the ability to perform daily activities without experiencing fatigue or physical stress. To attain physical wellness, you need to follow an effective diet and exercise regime. Also, avoid being involved in destructive habits, including consumption of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. It is also advisable to go for routine checkups.
  2. Physiological wellness refers to having a well-balanced, relaxed state of mind. Stress can prove to be a major obstacle in your pursuit to attain fitness. Besides affecting psychological health, it can affect your blood pressure and cause health complications. Hence, peace of mind is very important for attaining wellness. The more peaceful you feel, the lesser are your chances of being stressed or tensed. For this, you can try different activities, such as Yoga or meditation.
  3. Spiritual Wellness implies your ability to establish harmony and peace in your life. To achieve spiritual wellness, you should have congruity between your values and actions. You need to realize and acknowledge that there’s a common purpose binding the creation.
  4. Emotional wellness refers to the ability to understand yourself and effectively cope with the challenges of life. To attain emotional wellness, you need to have the ability to acknowledge and share your feelings of hope, joy, love, happiness, fear, anger, sadness and stress in a productive manner.
  5. Occupational wellness refers to getting personal satisfaction from your job or chosen career field. To accomplish occupational wellness, strive to have a positive impact on your organization and on your society as a whole.
  6. Social wellness is the power to connect with and relate to other people. To attain this, you should establish and maintain good relationship with your family, friends and colleagues.
  7. Environmental wellness means the ability to recognize or realize your own responsibility towards the quality of water, land and air that surrounds you. To achieve environmental wellness, you need to make a positive contribution towards the quality of your environment.

By maintaining a harmony between all these 7 dimensions, you can surely succeed in your endeavor to live a happy and fulfilling life.
