"Unsaturated Fats"

Unsaturated fats are the fats that are liquid at ordinary temperatures. Majority of the unsaturated fats are plant based, though you can also find unsaturated fats in specific meats. Unsaturated fats are also known as vegetables oils due their main origin and liquid state at room temperatures. Unsaturated fats are considered healthier than saturated fats. Unsaturated fats are generally of two types, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperatures but turn into solids when exposed to cold temperatures. Monounsaturated fats are found in nuts, olives, avocados, canola oil, and peanut oil. These types of fats are considered good fats as they lower the level of LDL (bad) cholesterol and maintain the level of HDL (good) cholesterol.

What About A Corporate Wellness Program That Helps With Polyunsaturated Fats?

Polyunsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature as monounsaturated fats. These fats are found in corn, soybean oils, sesame and safflower. Polyunsaturated fats reduce the LDL cholesterol but too much consumption of polyunsaturated fats also lowers the level of HDL cholesterol.

Why unsaturated fats are good and saturated fats are bad? To understand why unsaturated fats are good, you need to have basic knowledge of chemical structure of saturated and unsaturated fats.

Fats consist of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen atoms bound together. A fat molecule consists of three chains of these atoms. A fat is determined to be saturated or unsaturated by the number of hydrogen atoms attaching the carbon atoms.

If the number of hydrogen atoms has the ability to attach to more carbon atoms, the fat is considered unsaturated. If no additional carbon atoms can attach to hydrogen atoms, the fat is said to be saturated. Besides lowering, the level of bad cholesterol and maintaining the good cholesterol, the unsaturated fats also provides other benefits such as:

  • Though unsaturated fat intake is recommended for health benefits, it offers. The amount of unsaturated fat intake should be based on existing health conditions, overall weight, cardiovascular diseases, medications and daily consumption of proteins and carbohydrates. A dietary move from saturated fats to unsaturated fats is a good move towards health.
