Gestational diabetes is a form of the disease when women who have already been diagnosed with diabetes, have a high glucose count while they are pregnant. If a woman has diabetes, her body is not able to use the sugar in her blood completely, increasing the level of glucose in the body. In fact, 1-3% of pregnant women suffer from gestational diabetes. It develops within the first six months of the pregnancy period. In some cases though, it develops within the twentieth week itself. However, gestational diabetes goes once the baby is born.

But, gestational diabetes can cause a lot of harm to the woman and her baby during this time. The high blood sugar levels can be unhealthy for both baby as well as the mother. For example, if the baby is larger than normal, the mother will have complications during labor and may have to undergo a cesarean section. Gestational diabetes can even cause the mother to suffer from preeclampsia, a disease that can be fatal if it is not treated on time.

In order to prevent gestational diabetes, you need to consult your doctor. You doctor would most likely suggest you to tweak your diet. You can even refer to a dietician in this matter. But the basic rules are the same. You need to stop eating foods that have an excess of simple sugar. This includes cakes, ice cream, candies and cookies. Instead of these, you can switch your diet to natural sugar containing foods, like fruits. If you are hungry and you need some tidbits, you can have carrots, fruit slices or raisins. Food stuffs like rice and whole grain pasta and breads are good for both you and your baby. Most importantly, you need to have a balanced diet. You may have to eat less though, depending on how much weight you gain. Your doctor or dietician can help you draw a diet plan.

Exercise is an important factor to avoid gestational diabetes. It keeps your blood glucose level in check, and makes you feel better about yourself. When you are pregnant, walking is the best exercise. Swimming can also be equally beneficial. It's always better to consult your doctor on what exercise is more suitable for your condition.

Gestational diabetes is a dangerous condition but it can be dealt with. All you need to do is follow the diet prescribed by your doctor, exercise regularly, check your blood sugar levels frequently and take the prescribed medicines on time.
