Pain in any part of your body is considered to be a symptom of a disease or injury in or around that body part known as chronic pain. When the pain is sudden, it is called acute pain. Once you get these pangs of pain, you are urged to do something to stop the pain from worsening and to reduce the pain. This can be as simple as a reflex action. For example, if you place your hand on a hot stove, your hand starts paining because of the injury the heat is causing. To reduce the pain, your reflex urges you to jerk your hand away from the stove. The action, however, need not be reflex and can be more complicated, like resting or cooling.
However, pain can last longer in some cases. Some pains can be caused by a condition or injury that would take a long time to heal. This kind of long term pain is called chronic pain. In general, a pain that lasts more than six months can be considered as chronic pain. Unlike acute pain, where the problem is the wound or illness, in chronic pain the real problem is the pain itself. This is because the injury can take a long time to heal or may even never heal. So the purpose of the pain- to urge you to take action- is lost and becomes a problem in itself. Chronic pain can stop you from performing day-to-day activities, and weaken you.

The worst part about chronic pain is it grows with time. This is because the nerves that transmit the signals of pain to your brain becomes used to delivering the same message. The different types of chronic pain are listed below:
- General somatic pain, resulting from childhood injuries on your skin or muscles.
