In fact, it means that the food is related to a certain amount of energy that is measured in calories. Now, since calories are really small units, each nutrient can be calculated to release kilocalories of energy. So, as a standard adopted in most countries, these kilocalories are called as calories. In some places, they still use kilocalories and some countries people even use kilojoules, which is the most standard unit of energy.

From all this, it is clearly understood that calories are energy. And every person needs energy to survive. The heart, lungs and vital organs can only work if they are supplied the energy required.
