BMI stands for Body Mass Index. The BMI measures the fat present in body in relation to body weight. It is a simple way to find the amount of excess fat stored in body and associated risks of extra fat. BMI is applicable to men and women. Body Mass Index is generally used by health care practioner as a weight assessment tool. It is derived by dividing body weight (in kilograms) by height (in meters squared). The scientific formula for BMI is BMI=kg/m². If you are using pounds as a weight measurement and inches as a measurement for height then to get the BMI, you need to multiply the result by 703. For example BMI= (pounds/ inches²) x703. However if you are using ft as the height measurements, you need to multiply the result by 4.88 for example, BMI= (pounds/ ft²) x4.88.

BMI can be a great tool to predict risk for developing chronic diseases and obesity associated health problems. However, BMI does not consider the difference between excess fat and muscle in your body. This proves to be a major drawback because a healthy person can have a considerable percentage of muscle tissue, which can erroneously classify them as overweight. BMI considers only total body weight and does not measure the actual amount of fat in your body. Some people have a heavy bone structure while some have heavy muscle mass, which is erroneously considered as body fat in BMI calculations.
